TT Week Enduro - Results

Posted in Enduro Events by admin on the June 14th, 2010

There’s a rule in most SMCC timecard events that if at some point in the event competitors don’t question their decision to enter then the course wasn’t tough enough. Judging by the lengthy test times, damaged machinery and multiple DNFs the TT Week Enduro was undoubtedly a tough event made worse by steady rain.

The course included 3 plantations with special tests in Ohio and Ballaugh with added ‘going’ in Tholt y Will plantation, each course featured lengthy steep descents between trees, a treacherously slippy off camber uphill climb in Ballaugh and a steep climb in Ohio. As the event progressed and the conditions caused blockages for some competitors the course was cut down to reduce damage to the land which meant that test times fell as the event went on.

Experts was won by Danny McCanney with a healthy lead over Russell Milward and Keiron Jones.

Clubman winner was Jos Corlett with some impressive times ahead of Andy Cannell with Robert Qualye and Nick Ward separated by a mere 1s. Mark Crellin had a challenging event loosing his mud guard in an argument with a tree and having mud thrown in his face from the front wheel cost him a good 10mins in Ballaugh as well as having to perform repairs in the pits, he was smiling at the end though.

The sportsman class was won by trials rider Damien Owen from Adam Huxam and Richard Curphy the field had 7 DNFs and some lengthy test times.

Event organisor Mike Turner and the SMCC Committee would like to thank Marion Knight, Allan Lund, the Clague brothers and friends, Michelle Robbie Mark and Jason Turner, Nick Cannon, Russell and Caroline Milward for their help setting out and running the event.

Settled and dry weather prior to the event made for perfect conditions for round 2 of the SMCC PKF IoM ACU Enduro Championship.

Starting  from the Old Railway carpark St Johns, competitors warmed up on the road and green lanes including Lhergy Colvine and Mannanans Chair before test #1 at Eairy Beg plantation. This was the more challenging of the 2 tests and featured a couple of nasty climbs and a bog early on which cost more than a couple of riders penalties on time.

After Eairy Beg the course took riders up The Dowse and its punishing boulders before descending into Greeba and past Brenda Crellins house en route to test 2# in Archallagan. This was longer and less technical than Eairy Beg with a few good blasts along fire roads and the edge of the plantation giving a bit of relief from the more tricky roots and logs sections.

Experts completed 4 laps and it was Danny McCanney that took top honours from Russell Milward both riders having had cracking results at the recent BEC round at Elgin.  Kieron Jones put in solid performance for 3rd ahead of Ben Begbie who had an eventful day first getting stuck in the bog in Eairy Beg then loosing his way in Archallagan and finding himself out of position and picking up penatlies.

Clubman was the hardest fought class of the 3 with less than a minute separating the first 4 riders. The advantage was with Robert ‘Bodger’ Quayle at the end but only by 18sec from Andy Cannell, Sid DeBacker a mere 8 secs behind in 3rd. Ryan Corkill was only 17secs back in 4th.

Sportsman was convincingly won by trials rider Damian Owen from Craig Ferguson and Adam Huxam.

Event organisor Nigel Beaumont and the SMCC committee would like to thank everyone involved with the event including Timekeepers Bob and Peter Clague and partners, Phil Dearden, Gorden Ashead, Robbie Turner and Danni Carswell, Helen Beaumont as well as the ambulance staff and DAFF for supporting the sport.

Easter Monday Fun Enduro Results

Posted in Enduro Results by admin on the April 5th, 2010
SMCC ran its annual Easter Monday Enduro at land outside Castletown.

The multilap Hare & Hounds event was advertised as a fun event but over night rain added to the standing water already collected on the fields along side Castle Rushen High School making the going considerably more challenging than the field had hoped for.

The event was a fundraiser for Breakthrough Breast Cancer and riders sporting womens underwear and various fancy dress were given a front row start. One rider who capitalised on this advantage was expert rider Kieron Jones who led the first lap by a considerable margin.

Given the ‘fun’ nature of the event the committee took the decision to give electronic timing a try, with no championship points to be contended the timing was left to Graham Hughes of Manx Timing Solutions. Each competitor was required to carry a plastic ‘dibber’ which needed to be swiped each lap.  With 5 classes in total a short and incredibly muddy course with over 100 competitors meant that it was a baptism of fire for the system which performed flawlessly. As it happened traditional lap scoring would have been nearly impossible due to the mud covered bikes.

Dalby teenager Kieron Jones lead the field for much of the event and made light work of the slippy logs and tyres in the harder but shorter section of the course. But an overheating bike forced him to pit and let Antony Smith take a well deserved and close win with the always fast Ben Begbie in 3rd aboard his less powerful 4 stroke 250 Husqvana.

Clubman was won by Sid Debacker from bikini wearing Matt Garside with 3rd placed Robert ‘Bodger’ Quayle proving fossils can still be fast.

Sportsman honors went to Richard Hulme, Richard Curphy and Ian Braley. Rob Temple had a nasty spill in the early stages and the club wishes him well.

Novices class was won by Aiden McDermott with a notable performance by Kathryn Sentence who brought her Gas Gas to the finish and recorded 6 laps 3 more than her boyfriend (ex Centre MX Champion Chris Stokes) could manage.

The above all recived easter eggs and donated prizes from Jason Griffith, Isle of Man Honda and Road & Track bike shops.  Over all winner Antony Smith won the top prize of a Fatted Lamb from landowner Paul Costain.

Event organisor Graham Taubman and the SMCC Committee would like to thank the Southern 100 Club for use of the paddock, Willy Clucas and the team of scrutineers, Timekeepers Helen Beaumont and Michelle Turner, Jimmy Vickers for some excellent jumps and groundwork, Mark Crellin for logs and obsticles and Paul Costain for help of all kinds as well as the use of the land.

The committee would also like to thank all the club members who helped with the setting out and clearing up of the course which made life much easier for all concerned.
